Customer Service

It has been a while since my last post but I feel I accomplished something today.
Ever since selling all my professional-level DSLRs and zooms (along with several prime lenses) and settling on just a Fuji X100S along with its pair of conversion lenses, I have struggled to get comfortable at the distances required to "fill the frame". As a working newspaper shooter, I usually carried one body with a telephoto zoom and another with a wide angle zoom. I usually took as many shots with the wide angle as I did with the telephoto as my eye wandered both near and far for opportunities. With just a wide to normal field of view, I have had trouble retraining my eye to see consistently at the shorter distance and getting myself into position for the shot I wanted.
Today, as my wife and I sat in the local coffee shop, I spotted the on-duty barista assisting a regular customer in braiding his hair. I hesitated to get close enough for a shot but then remember what I had been working to achieve in recent years. After taking the shot, I mentioned to the two of them that Gallery Row was the only place in town with this kind of "customer service". Both got a chuckle out of my comment and I think I may have just broken through a barrier that I had thrown up since retiring.


On the technical side, this is not a very good image. There was a lot of flare due to the bright sun but I had no time to get a better shooting angle and just had to make do with what was in front of me as I got close enough to fill the frame. But I think I lived up to what  Robert Capa once said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you aren't close enough."
