CHAMPIONS!

Back in 1998, I left my fairly lucrative program management position to go fulltime into photography. I had always wanted to see if I could make it as a newspaper shooter. To that end, I went to the closest high school and started shooting sports starting with football and volleyball. That transitioned into basketball, both girls and boys. While the boys were entertaining, the girls were dominating against their competition. They made it as far as the state regional finals before a mistake with less than a minute left to play cost them a chance at a trip to the final four and a shot at the state championship.
This year, after dominating the competition again, the Lady Bulldogs rebounded from a loss in the district championship and went on a 4-0 run to take the Class 1A championship, the first for the Lady Bulldogs in school history.
Since I am no longer in the area and not shooting for newspapers anymore, I decided to honor this year's team and their well-deserved championship with a look at the past team that came so close to doing what this team accomplished.

The girl on the left is Leah Dutton driving to the hoop for two. The girl on the right is Jessica Spiers shooting a free throw with the scoreboard showing the Lady Bulldogs up by 23 points with 3:43 left in the game. Both of these shots were made on Tri-X pushed two stops and processed in D-76. The camera gear was a Olympus OM-4T and a Tokina 2,8/80-200mm lens. Yep, total old school with manual focusing and anticipating where the shot would be.
Congratulations to this year's Lady Bulldogs for a fantastic accomplishment!!

COME ON SPRING!!

As winter sends another chilly blast to the southeastern USA, here is a shot that brings memories of warm temperatures and happy days. Captured at the Destin Commons in Destin, FL, in November, 2003.

DEAD END

Been going through my old film files lately and ran across this shot that I happened on back in October, 2003. Not sure if this image made the paper that week but I got a chuckle out of it.

I never did get a chance to meet the couple but hopefully this shot was not a forecast of the future. I hope they would have seen the humor in the juxtaposition of this image.
